Meanwhile Obsidian is looking at a wealth of new possibilities under the Microsoft umbrella from sequels to their recent releases to new IPs to possible sequels of some old fan favorites. Trey Parker and Matt Stone have been open about their uncertainty with the future of the franchise, though considering everything from more movies, games, or even opting for special episodes instead the traditional season format. South Park has become a fixture of modern pop culture, joining the ranks of shows like The Simpsons as one of the few creative works that can continue making jokes as long as there is life happening to make jokes of. After Microsoft's planned acquisition of both Obsidian and Bethesda was announced, though, the conversation has resurfaced to the point even Obsidian is playing coy. Much to fans' chagrin that seemed completely off the table as of 2018 when Obsidian responded with a magic eight ball shutdown on Twitter. It's been over a decade since the game launched, and for that entire time neither Obsidian nor Bethesda have been able to tease a new game without fans wondering if it would be Fallout: New Vegas 2.

Sawyer's upcoming project has been a pain point for fans, as the game most want to see from Obsidian is a sequel to their critically-acclaimed Fallout: New Vegas.

They've seen great reception for recent titles like Outer Worlds, which was nominated for a number of game awards, and Grounded, which saw rapid success last summer, that have helped them expand as a company. The development side for Obsidian in particular has evolved considerably since their last South Park adventure. What Obsidian Is Doing Now & What It Means For South Park Factor that in with the duo having to voice nearly all the roles, and the development process becomes quite the undertaking. The script for South Park: The Fractured but Whole was roughly equivalent to two feature-length films. With them being intrinsic to the creation of any South Park work it complicates the development process significantly. While tie-ins are nothing new in the gaming industry, South Park brings a unique challenge in that Trey and Matt not only write and direct the show, but also voice a large majority of the characters.

Related: South Park: 10 Funniest Running Gags With the first South Park game Trey and Matt left a lot of the work up to Obsidian, but on the sequel it was reported that the two creators of the franchise had much more collaboration with Ubisoft San Francisco. Given the duo's future plans for the show being rather ambiguous despite it's renewal through 2022, and Obsidian growing as a developer, it seems the two parties may be moving in opposite directions. South Park: The Fractured But Whole saw Ubisoft bring the development in-house with their San Francisco team heading up production. While it was Obsidian that was originally contacted by Trey and Matt and negotiated the deal with THQ, after finishing South Park: The Stick of the Truth they've not been involved with the franchise. With the continued success of the South Parkfranchise and the creators Trey Parker's and Matt Stone's love of gaming, an eventual sequel to South Park: The Fractured But Wholewould seem likely. However, with Obsidian Entertainment's growing library of projects and recent acquisition by Microsoft, said sequel might come from a different developer. It's further complicated by Ubisoft being the publisher that bought the South Park rights from now-defunct THQ after they declared bankruptcy.
